Kinlet Hall was withdrawn from service on the West Somerset Railway during October 2016 for a Heavy General Overhaul. Although earlier than planned, this work will enable essential boiler repairs to be made and a fresh boiler certificate gained.
The locomotive was taken by road to Tyesley Locomotive Works, Birmingham while the tender went to the Weston-super-Mare depot of it's owner, JJP Holdings (SW) Ltd, which also operates as Crosville Motor Services in the town. The tender has been deep cleaned and is now in undercover storage alongside our other engine, No 7027 'Thornbury Castle'.
4936 has been stripped for overhaul and the boiler was lifted at the end of November 2016. Work on the firebox has already begun. The loco's motion was taken down in early January 2017 in preparation for the wheels to be dropped so that the axle bearings and horn guides can receive attention. NDT tests are due to be carried out on the axles in February 2017.
